Description

Ship Builders Axe

A shipwright's tool, the ship builder's axe came in a variety of shapes and sizes. The shape of the blade depended on the function of the axe. The edge of the blade was either straight or curved, most being curved; The angle of the blade also varied depending on whether hard or softer wood was to be cut. A thinner blade was required for the hardest woods. Ours also has a hammer poll as did many of the originals.

The head is 4 inches along the cutting edge and 6 inches long across the top of the blade.

DETAILS:

  • This axe uses our large, 19 inch long handle.
  • The weight of the head is about 1.5 lbs.
  • The overall weight with the handle is about 2.0 lbs.

The Best Axe I've Ever Owned!
I have had my Shipbuilder's Axe for several months, and I can say that this is by far the best axe I've ever owned. My wife and I go on backpacking trips every summer, and I always bring an axe for camp use. I've gone through 2 tomahawks and two hatchets before I found H&B Forge and bought this axe. The quality is absolutely incredible. The head is thick and sturdy, but not overly heavy, and holds an edge better than any other I've used. With a convex edge I can sharpen it in minutes with a file and it lasts for the entire trip. It cuts very well, and allowed me to process large 12 inches logs for firewood, whereas with a hawk or hatchet I was limited to logs under 6 inches thick. It's very helpful that the axe's weight and size allows for both one and two-handed use. On top of all this, it is absolutely beautiful! I couldn't stop staring at it, even when I was swinging it! If you want an excellent camp axe hand forged in the USA, buy the Shipbuilder's Axe and you won't regret it.

Thanks also for rushing my order so I would have this axe for our trip this summer!
